How can I find out if there is a
Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Clinic Speech-Language Pathologist
in my area?
Clicking on the Locations button
on the NSHSC homepage
will connect you to a map
of the NSHSC locations. Clicking on a location
will give you the address and telephone number of that location.
You can also look in your phone book under Nova Scotia Hearing
& Speech Clinic or contact your local hospital
to determine the nearest location.
How can I get my child, spouse,
a friend, or myself referred for a speech-language evaluation?
The NSHSC maintains an open referral
policy, meaning that with the exception of inpatients who
are in the hospital, anyone may refer when there is a concern
regarding communication. This includes parents, doctors,
spouses, other health professionals or even the person him/herself.
How much will speech-language
pathology services cost?
You will not have to pay for speech-language
pathology services received from the Nova Scotia Hearing
and Speech Clinic if you are a resident of Nova Scotia.
Costs are covered by Nova Scotia medical insurance.
What age children do you
work with?
The Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Clinic
(NSHSC) speech-language pathologists work with children
who have not yet entered the school system.
Once a
child has entered the school system he/she is followed by
school speech- language pathologists, who are separate from
the NSHSC. If your child has been followed by a NSHSC
speech-language pathologist and still requires further intervention
upon entering school, he/she will be referred to the school
speech-language pathologist.
Should I wait until my child
is school-aged and have him/her seen then?
No. It is recommended that a child
be seen as soon as a communication difficulty is suspected
or diagnosed. In most cases, the sooner the intervention
is initiated the better and faster the child's success will
occur. As well, some children may experience
low self esteem or behavioural difficulties due to communication
difficulties. Early intervention can help prevent
these problems from developing into serious issues.
