The Newborn Hearing Screening Program (NHS)

Who is "at risk" for hearing loss?
In 2000, the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (U.S.) revised their position statement on NHS, which we use as our provincial guidelines. These factors include the following:
• family history of permanent childhood sensorineural hearing loss
•  In utero infections- syphilis, toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes
•  Craniofacial abnormalities, including those with morphological abnormalities of the pinna and the ear canal
•  Stigmata or other findings associated with a syndrome known to include a sensorineural and/or a conductive hearing loss
•  An illness or condition requiring admission of 48 hours or greater to a neonatal intensive care unit – NICU
